We are all creatures of habit. The first instinct we have when we wake up is to react to what we know, and that instinct is not always helpful.
When we do find ourselves reacting to something that we know how to react to, we find ourselves acting in certain ways, and those ways can lead us right to certain consequences. Our dog, for instance, is of course always groaning when he’s petted. It can be a sign of a serious illness, or it can be a kind of nervous habit.
We have a tendency to avoid talking too much, so when we’re on autopilot to avoid what we know, we may be able to control our behavior accordingly.

This is a serious problem when it comes to empathy. Even things we do know to be our own are seen by others as being out of our control. The trouble is that if we don’t have the ability to empathize with other people then we can’t help them. You can learn to take a stand and be able to express yourself, but there has to be a way to help. It’s possible that this is one of those things that can be learned, but we don’t make it easy.
Again, all you need to learn is taking a stand. We can see a lot of the same things in our own dog, but he is not a human being and is not capable of empathy. The way we communicate with dogs is different then with people. There is no language, the only way to talk is through body movements. We will learn to do this, but we cant help our dog, we need to help ourselves.
This is a very common thing in dog training, but people often dont realize they are doing it wrong. We are talking about a dog that is used to human contact in ways that we do not understand. We can have the best of intentions, but if we dont give it a chance its hard to change. We can get the dog used to human contact, but if it doesnt learn that, it will eventually learn to do whatever it wants.
